Mesothelioma Risk

The risk of developing mesothelioma following extended exposure to asbestos is considered quite high. The most recent data suggests that about 7% of all individuals exposed to moderate to high levels of asbestos for at least 3 years will at some point in their life develop mesothelioma. Percentages of many of the other illnesses associated with asbestos exposure are much higher, but mesothelioma is considered to be the most severe condition directly linked to asbestos exposure. Although it is not yet quantified, exposure to asbestos for even a limited amount of time is thought to significantly increase a person's risk of developing mesothelioma.

The percentage of mesothelioma cases which have been directly linked to asbestos exposure is around 90%, making asbestos exposure the overwhelming cause of the vast majority of mesothelioma cases. After a person has been exposed to asbestos there is no way to reduce their risk of later developing mesothelioma, making preventing exposure to asbestos the only way to prevent asbestos related mesothelioma. It is important for individuals who have had extended exposure to be aware of possible symptoms of mesothelioma and consult a doctor should any present themselves.

The only way to prevent the progression of mesothelioma once a patient has developed mesothelioma is quick and aggressive treatment. Early diagnosis significantly increases a patient’s chance of long term survival, but there is still no treatment which can guarantee full recovery to any patient once mesothelioma has been diagnosed. Mesothelioma poses a significant threat to any individual who has been exposed to asbestos as it can quickly develop and often does not present any significant symptoms until it progresses to stages 3 and 4.
