Mesothelioma Chemotherapy

Mesothelioma is most commonly thought of as being so severe that it cannot be treated and being entirely removed from its human host has seemed impossible to many. In many cases, a combination of removal of large tumors and a regimen of chemotherapy can be highly effective against mesothelioma. New chemical agents and chemotherapy ratios are being tested to find the best possible chemotherapy treatment for mesothelioma. Because of the relative rarity of mesothelioma and the fact that the disease was mostly unknown just 20 years ago, the development of better treatment options has only occurred recently.

Although early detection and limited spreading are usually thought of as the two factors which contribute most to a person having a relatively good prognosis, treating mesothelioma with the best possible chemotherapy regimen is often the difference between life and death. In tandem with surgical removal and radiation, chemotherapy is aimed at total removal of cancerous cells. Having cancer cells entirely removed from the body is the only way to assure long term survival since cancer cells rapidly divide and can quickly spread throughout the body if allowed to remain.

As is true for chemotherapy treatment with all types of cancer, the chemotherapy schedule is not only created to target the specific cancer but also needs to consider personal factors for each individual. Each chemical agent used in chemotherapy has its own set of side effects and risks. To find the most effective treatment for an individual, factors unique to each patient must be taken into consideration. Factors such as age, relative health aside from cancer, and progression of the cancer each require careful consideration prior to any specific chemotherapy regimen being designed. The most important part of any treatment schedule is realizing the specific side effects of treatment and ensuring that they will not be worse than the disease it is meant to treat.
